Kim Wilde gave passengers on a London commuter train
this week an impromptu performance of her smash hit single 'Kids In America' –
watch it above. The merry moment was caught on camera by passenger Katherine
Eames and uploaded to YouTube. The footage was shot as revellers, including
Wilde and her brother who had a guitar to hand, made their way home from Magic
FM's Christmas bash.

"After a truly rubbish day, I got on the train home and
couldn't get a seat, a man pulled out his guitar, 'Oh here we go!' I
thought," wrote Eames. "Then a drunken woman starts singing. Hang on
a minute, I know that voice?! It really was KIM WILDE! This totally made my
day." Wilde, who also performed
'Rockin Around The Christmas Tree', has taken to Twitter to express her
surprise at the overwhelming reaction the video, which has now gone viral.
truly,i am overwhelmed and confused at such a huge reaction to my night
out on the tiles.Making me giggle a LOT: )
On discovering that she was now trending on Twitter, Wilde,
who became a household name during the 80s thanks to her global, hit single
'Kids In America', wrote: "Trending? You'll all think I've pegged
it."
Some things in London are a constant such as the grumpiness
of commuters, just look at the “Bah, Humbug” expressions on the faces of the
passengers in the foreground who are not impressed that a bona fide, if
slightly tipsy, pop star is enlivening their drab journey home. But those on
the train from London Kings Cross approaching Potters Bar, Hertfordshire on a
First Capital Connect train service, suddenly realised it was brother and
sister duo Kim and Ricky Wilde putting on an impromptu performance.
Kim and
Ricky are the kids of Marty Wide who was among the first generation of British
pop stars to emulate American rock and roll. Later, as a songwriter and record
producer, he masterminded a string of 1980s hits for his daughter Kim. She was the
most-charted British solo female act of the 1980s, with seventeen UK Top 40 hit
singles throughout the decade (including her duets with Junior Giscombe and Mel
Smith).
Kids in America is now more than 30 years old and hit number
two in the UK when first released. She followed it by saying: ‘Now, everyone,
it's Christmas time - I'm going to sing you a Christmas song’. Wilde now hosts
a show on Magic with Rick Astley from 10am to 2pm on Sundays. She tweeted
today: ‘Great Xmas party Magic - left somewhat over refreshed with a pair of
antlers on my head ; )’
Here is Kim’s original version but how refreshing to find a
pop star who keeps it real.
