The Occupied State of Palestine

Congratulations to and solidarity with the people of the Occupied State of Palestine. Britain's abstention by Klingon Hague was a cowardly disgrace but that about sums up Britain's role and shameful history in the Middle East. Israel says the UN is not the conduit for peace. It certainly practices what it preaches as the terrorist fathers of the current Israeli leadership murdered the UN Peace Envoy, Count Bernadotte, and the IDF and its militia proxies murdered Irish UN Peacekeepers in the Lebanon.

The UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians non-member observer state status - a move strongly opposed by Israel and the US. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the assembly the vote was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel. Israel's envoy to the UN said the bid pushed peace process "backwards", while the US said the move was "unfortunate". Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated on the streets of Ramallah, in the West Bank, after the result was announced.

Some European countries, such as France and Spain, shifted their support behind the UN request in part because they want to strengthen the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in the wake of the fighting in Gaza earlier this month. Hamas emerged from the war considerably more popular among Palestinians for firing hundreds of rockets into Israel, and for the first time striking at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Israel has no jurisdiction in East Jerusalem, yet its courts repeatedly pass rulings on occupancy and the rights of Palestinians to build homes. Meanwhile the USA  'criticises' the decision of Israel to build new settlements on Palestinian land in East Jerusalem and on the West Bank as 'counter-productive. Presumably the US missed the fact that building in occupied territory is illegal under the Geneva convention, against a series of UN rulings and ruled unlawful by the international court. More importantly as any Two-State settlement envisaged in the 1993 "Camp David" Agreement which the US guaranteed must be based on the pre- 1967 borders it is being collusive in Israeli dishonesty whilst reciting the meaningless broken record that the Palestinians must return to negotiations "without pre-conditions."
Next year in Jerusalem?

Many Palestinians contrast Abbas's commitment to what is widely regarded as a failed diplomatic strategy, in which he has largely been humiliated by the Israelis as they continue to expand Jewish settlements on illegally occupied land, with what is seen as Hamas's success in forcing concessions through resistance.
