Hacked off

Leveson has announced his recommendations. The victims of press abuses want them implemented. Let the Government know that you support the victims. Sign the petition now and don’t let David Cameron, Boris Johnson and other hired hands of Media Barons squander a chance to protect the ordinary person.

Victims of press intrusion are urging the government to fully implement the Leveson Inquiry's recommendations on newspaper regulation. Lord Justice Leveson called for a new independent watchdog - which he said should be underpinned by legislation. Inquiry witnesses Gerry McCann and Christopher Jeffries launched the online petition, run by the campaign group Hacked Off. Ministers say a draft bill on the report will be ready in a fortnight.

Lord Justice Leveson's 2,000-page report into press ethics, published on Thursday, found that some press behaviour had been "outrageous" and "wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people". He said the press - having failed to regulate itself in the past - must create a new and tough regulator but it had to be backed by legislation to ensure it was effective. The report exposed divisions in the coalition government, with Prime Minister David Cameron opposing statutory control, unlike his deputy Nick Clegg, who wants a new law introduced without delay. Labour leader Ed Miliband also supports a new press law.

A new non-aligned grass roots campaign needs your help. Hacked Off, the campaign for a free and accountable press has been set up to ensure the Leveson inquiry proposals are implemented. Please can you help them immediately by urgently signing their petition calling on David Cameron not to backtrack on his promise to the victims of press abuse?

Then can you forward the petition to your family and friends. We want as many people as possible signed up to the Hacked Off campaign. The victims feel that David Cameron has broken his promises to them. And they are angry.

As JK Rowling said yesterday:

"I thought long and hard about the possible consequences to my family of giving evidence and finally decided to do so because I have made every possible attempt to protect my children’s privacy under the present system, and failed. If I, who can afford the very best lawyers, cannot guarantee the privacy of those dearest to me, what hope did the Dowlers, the McCanns and the Watsons ever have of protecting their own children and their own good names?"

Our goal - Labour's goal - is to ensure David Cameron will not get his Leveson betrayal through Parliament.  Work has already started assembling a coalition to wage a cross party campaign in the House of Commons and everywhere. We will bring to bear every resource, call in every promise, rattle every skeleton in every cupboard. This is a step too far by Cameron. The whole country knows he doesn't have the moral legitimacy to do it. We're going to do everything we can to make sure we implement the core recommendations of the Leveson report.

Cameron wants to sell-out to Rupert Murdoch and powerful press interests because he is scared, and he is weak. But that is why he cannot succeed - because he is weak. And he is wrong.

  1. It makes you wonder why so much money was spent on this enquiry if the recommendations will be ignored!
